Leaf & Cane
19 New Bridge St, London EC4V 6DB
At what first appears to be a refurbished medieval dungeon crossed with a jungle, nestled in the heart of Blackfriars, The Leaf and Cane Cigar Lounge sits just below the Hyatt Hotel, and stands as a hidden beacon of sophistication, offering aficionados and novices alike a welcoming and unique experience within the world of cigars. From the moment you venture down the stone steps off the street, the ambiance instantly hits you. Transporting you from loud, cold London to the heart of South America. Setting the stage for an unforgettable journey.
Upon entering, the first thing that strikes you is the well-thought-out décor. Leafy green tones dominate the space, complemented by soft leather seats and ambient lighting that creates an intimate and inviting atmosphere. The attention to detail is evident, and every element seems to have been carefully chosen to enhance the overall experience, with each seating booth being dedicated to a famous cigar - this evening we were in the Cohiba Siglo VI booth. The knowledgeable and approachable staff are more than happy to assist in selecting the perfect cigar to suit your preferences. Particular shout out to our host, JJ!
The outdoor lounge itself is separated into several arched booths, featuring comfortable heated seats that encouraged late night conversation. There's central and south American music playing in the background, with the option to increase/decrease the volume and lighting to suit you, it creates a truly unique experience as you're hidden away inside your booth. We usually spend around 2-4 hours there drinking, chatting and of course, smoking a nice stick. In addition to this, where the smoking arches are below street level it provides a strange but beautiful quietness. An escape from the bustling city.
On this evening, I chose a Joya De Nicaragua with a glass of Diplomatico Reserva whilst Sam had a Montecristo No.2 alongside a Glenfiddich 12 year. Both great choices, that served us well into the evening. The inclusion of a well-stocked bar and live music adds an extra layer to the experience. Their skilled mixologists are adept at crafting the perfect cocktail to pair with your chosen cigar, such as Mezcal Negroni or their Oaxaca Old Fashioned.
The pricing at Leaf and Cane may reflect its location and ambiance, but is not unreasonable compared to other cigar bars, having previously picked up a Oliva Serie V for £15, its great value. In addition, the food is also fantastic - bringing along those tangy, rich tastes of South/Central America with their Beef Quesadillas, Pao de Queijo and Churros.
In conclusion, Leaf and Cane Cigar Lounge is a haven for those seeking a refined and relaxing escape. It's not just a cigar lounge; it's a destination where time seems to slow down as you detach from the city above and get transported to South America for a cigar, a delicious drink or some food. A true gem in the heart of London, and definitely worth a visit soon!
